Image result for gossip girl Welcome to the scandalous lives of Manhattan's elite. The show, Gossip Girl, is all about a bunch of billionaires and a "poor" boy who tries to navigate their way through high school and college, while an unidentifiable cyber page bullies and posts every single drama that is created within their friend group. In a sense, these teenagers are practically famous. Besides the entertainment of the show created by watching what a fantasy life with the 1% would look like or the secrets and mysteries spilled during each episode, Gossip Girl holds a unique play on identities in many ways.
One of the biggest and most obvious one, is Gossip Girl herself/himself. Here, we got this person hiding behind a screen who, with multiple times in the show was tried to be identified, but remained in the dark until the person finally came out and wanted to tell the world. We have to examine and consider the multiple identities that this person had possessed. Before we get any further on the topic... I have a warning. *THERE WILL BE SPOILER ALERTS* By the end of the show, Dan Humphrey aka "lonely boy" aka the "poor one" was Gossip Girl. The craziest thing was when he explained it all, the whole phenomenon was created in order to help him find his own identity or place within a world that he never felt apart of. You see, Dan had always wanted to be "in." But he states that no matter how much money you had (keep in mind, the private school they attended in the show was filled with millionaires), and no matter how hard you tried, you couldn't get in with this particular group. Because, he said, "It was a birth right." So what did he do? Dan Humphrey created a website where he became the eyes and ears of the city, and because of the addiction of gossip, ended up creating a whole empire of viewers who would send in tips to keep the website running, either for revenge, jealousy, or just for the pure fun drama. Crazy right? In a way, that was Dan's way of finally getting in with that particular group, he finally earned the respect (and maybe the fear) of Serena, Chuck, Blair, and Nate. Eventually in the show, he squeezed his way into the group by dating Serena, but no matter what, she was always the superior one, and it took a long time for her friends not to patronize him. Looking at this show character as an outsider, Dan was able to create multiple identities. He was the poor, lonely boy who always wanted "in" within this type of world, but he wouldn't ever admit it until the season finale. He was this sweet and humble boy that Serena dated, and he claimed that he would never care about money and didn't want to be in her toxic world (which made her want him even more). He was a unknown, famous, society whisperer who destroyed lives, released secrets, and hurt the people who he loved the most. So.... as a watcher of a show, I encourage YOU guys to choose for yourselves, which one is the actual him? And which identities were the ones he created in order to get him to where he ended up? A rich husband to Serena, a successful author, and most importantly, one of them.
