Expansion on Freewrite #13

Dear Readers,

"Brave New World" presents

"Lenina was left to face the horrors of Malpais unaided. They came crowding in on her thick and fast. The spectacle of two young women giving breast to their babies made her blush and turn away her face. She had never seen anything so indecent in her life. And what made it worse was that, instead of tactfully ignoring it, Bernard proceeded to make open comments on this revoltingly viviparous scene. Ashamed, now that the effects of the soma had worn off, of the weakness he had displayed that morning in the hotel, he went out of his way to show himself strong and unorthodox...."

The difference between this dystonia novel and the society in the world today (well at least in North America) are drastic. However, I want to take note on the differences and similarities that are prevalent facing my real world and the world that I am reading about. First off, "Brave New World" is a society were family, love, and relationships are looked down upon, forbidden even. How does that contribute to importance of their government/upper body's control? Perhaps, love above all, is the most powerful feeling, a feeling that can create change and movement. Destroy this feeling, and the world is up for control. Lenina is part of the blind, who doesn't see what is wrong about their society. In fact, she thinks it's the best society there is, and anything that remotely relates to the past history is dangerous. However, Bernard is somehow different. Why he sees through cracks within the corrupted system is in question, but nether less, he is able to think in more complex ways. This American society in reality, is filled with family units, love, and relationships with our peers, friends, husband/wives, and blood bonding. Perhaps, the dystopian society does have less crime, efficient working industries, but what WE have is freedom. Freedom to think what we want, to say what we want, and most importantly, to act as we want. "Brave New World" is filled with scientists who actually made it possible for humans to be created handmade, with no procreation of the natural process. So basically, every human within that society is already predestined with whether they will be a Beta or an Alpha or a lower caste system since they were born. Their whole lives were planned out for them, with no choice whatsoever. I think the good thing about the society that I live in right now, is filled with so many possibilities. We may not be in control of the settings in which we came about in this world, but we have so many chances to become what we want, and be in charge of our own future and our identity. We can edit, revise, and create our identity, while their identity is one singular switch of chemicals.

However, the quote also concludes that Lenina as well as probably the majority of the population, has to take "somas" in order to feel good. This pill, drug, chemical or whatever allows her relax, remain happy, and light. I believe this parallels to the drugs and alcohol used in today's real society. Many people don't like living in a constant truth, where they have to recognize what they need to do, what they may see in themselves and others, or perhaps they are just unsatisfied with their lives. Drug and alcohol abusers/addicts parallel these characters, except the characters such as Lenina, are told by the government that it is a good thing to take. To feel numb to reality is good.

If you ask me which society is better, I wouldn't actually know. I know the most obvious answer is to chose mine, since we are left with freedoms to think for ourselves. However, each society still has very prevalent flaws, so with that said, I believe that I will choose no sides, and allow this book to just merely be a fun entertainment.
